Your license key is genuine and pre-validated, so activation is fast. Pick your product below and follow along — every step is short, with the exact menu paths and screen prompts. If anything goes sideways, jump straight to the troubleshooting section or call us at (307) 303-9251.
Every Microsoft license activates the same way at a high level: install the software → paste your 25-character key → it phones Microsoft and reports as licensed. The detail differs slightly per product, which is what the rest of this page covers.
Both arrived in your order email. The key is a 25-character string formatted like XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. The download link points to Microsoft's CDN directly — never a third-party mirror.
Works for Office 2024 / 2021 / 2019 — Pro Plus, Home & Business and Home & Student editions. Total time: 3–5 minutes including download.
Open the order confirmation and click the Download Office link. It goes straight to setup.office.com — Microsoft's own servers, not a mirror.
Save the SetupProdRet.x64.exe file (about 4 MB) — it's the bootstrapper that downloads the rest.
Double-click the file you just downloaded. Click Yes on the UAC prompt. The installer downloads the full Office suite (~3 GB) and installs it automatically. No checkboxes, no toolbars — it just runs.
From the Start menu, open Word. You'll see an "Accept license terms" screen — accept. Then a sign-in prompt or activation prompt.
On the activation screen, choose I have a product key (not "Sign in" — that's for 365). Paste your 25-character key and click Next.
Microsoft's activation server confirms within 5–10 seconds. The product activates as "Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2024" (or your edition). Check by going to File → Account → Product Information — it should say "Activated Product".
You can close Word and use any Office app normally. The activation is bound to your hardware and persists across reinstalls of Office on this PC.
If Windows is already installed (you bought a license to upgrade or replace an expired one), this takes about a minute. If you're installing Windows fresh, the installer will ask for your key during setup — same key, same result.
Press Win + I to open Settings. Go to System → Activation. You'll see your current state — most likely "Windows is not activated" or "Activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account".
Under Upgrade your edition of Windows (or "Activation state"), click Change product key. A pop-up appears. Click Yes on the UAC prompt if it asks.
Paste in the format shown — dashes are added automatically. Click Next → Activate.
Activation takes 10–30 seconds. The page refreshes to show "Activation state: Active" and (if relevant) confirms an edition upgrade — e.g. Home → Pro happens automatically with a Pro key.
Windows reports as fully licensed in Settings → System → About and in winver. You can run Windows Update, install fresh features, and your install will pass every genuine check.
You can either enter the key during setup, or skip ("I don't have a product key") and activate later via the steps above. Both work — the second is sometimes easier.
Microsoft 365 keys are subscription redemption codes, not perpetual product keys. You redeem them on your Microsoft Account and they extend your 365 entitlement by the term you bought (12 or 15 months).
microsoft.com/setupOpen microsoft.com/setup (also linked from your order email). Sign in with the Microsoft Account that will host the subscription. For 365 Family, this should be the account of the person you want as family organiser.
On the redemption page, paste your code and click Next. Microsoft confirms the product (e.g. Microsoft 365 Family — 15 months) and previews the new end-date of your subscription.
Click Confirm. Your subscription is now active until the new end-date. Office apps installed on this account will pick up the updated entitlement at next launch (force a refresh: File → Account → Update License).
From account.microsoft.com/family, invite up to 5 additional people (6 total). Each gets full Office apps and 1 TB of OneDrive on their own account.
Office for Mac is downloaded from Microsoft and activated against your Microsoft Account — there is no product-key dialog in the Mac apps. Your key becomes a subscription on your account.
Open microsoft.com/setup on the Mac (Safari works fine), sign in, and paste your 25-character key. Microsoft adds the Office license to your account.
After redemption you'll see a Install Office button — click it. The Microsoft_Office_Installer.pkg downloads (about 2.2 GB).
Open the .pkg, click through the standard macOS install steps, enter your Mac password when prompted. Apps land in /Applications.
Open Word. When it asks to sign in, use the same Microsoft Account you redeemed against. The app picks up your license automatically — no key entry on the Mac side.
Roughly 99.5% of activations work on the first try. For the 0.5% that don't, here are the four errors we actually see at support — and the exact fix for each.
0xC004C008Usually means the key was entered with a typo, or auto-corrected (smart quotes around the dashes). Fix: copy the key directly from your order email, paste it into a plain text editor first to strip formatting, then paste from there into the activation dialog.
0x80072EE7The activation server is unreachable — usually firewall, VPN, or corporate proxy in the way. Fix: disconnect from VPN, ensure your antivirus isn't blocking activation.sls.microsoft.com, then retry. On corporate networks, you may need IT to allow-list Microsoft's activation endpoints.
0xC004C020Almost always means you've already activated this key on a different machine — perpetual Office and Windows keys are single-PC. Fix: if you're moving the license to a new PC, email us with your order number and we'll de-link the old hardware (takes 4–6 hours).
0xC004F050You're trying to activate (for example) a Windows 11 Pro key on a Windows 11 Home install. Fix: a Pro key automatically upgrades Home to Pro — but only via Settings → Activation → Change product key, not via the older slui dialog. Use the steps in the Windows section above.
Email Support@MMKeys.com with a screenshot of the error and your order number — typical reply 12 minutes. We'll either resolve it or issue a fresh key within 24 hours.
Perpetual Microsoft licenses (Office, Windows) bind to your hardware. As long as the PC's motherboard is unchanged, you can reinstall Windows or Office as many times as you like — the same key activates each time.
Reinstall Windows or Office normally. Enter the same key from your order email — it will activate against the existing hardware ID on Microsoft's servers.
Hardware change of this scale is treated as a new installation by Microsoft. Email Support@MMKeys.com with your order number — we'll either re-activate or issue a new key, free of charge, under our lifetime activation guarantee.
Sign out of your Microsoft Account on the device before handing it over. The Microsoft EULA prohibits transferring an activated perpetual key, so leave the install running but un-account'd. If you want to use the key on a different machine instead, see step 2.
If anything above doesn't quite match what you're seeing, please reach out. We've handled 540,000+ activations — odds are good we've seen your error before.
Yes — perpetual Office and Windows keys remain bound to your hardware. Reinstall as many times as you like; the same key will activate cleanly every time.
Yes, for the initial activation. The activation server validates the key on Microsoft's side, then your install runs offline forever after. The check happens once, in seconds.
No, perpetual licenses never expire. Microsoft 365 keys extend your subscription by the term you bought (e.g. 15 months); after that period you renew through Microsoft directly or buy another redemption code from us.
Yes — your account at MMkeys retains every key you've ever bought. Log in, open the order, and you'll see the key plus the original download link. We never delete order history.
For Microsoft 365: email us your order number and we'll work with Microsoft Support to move the entitlement. For Office perpetual: the license is tied to the hardware, not the account, so sign out and back in with the correct account — no support contact needed.
